For nearly 50 years, BMW has worked with some of the finest contemporary artists to turn 20 BMW vehicles into works of art. With custom exterior finishes that all make bold personal statements, these vehicles turn heads even when they’re not moving. These models aren’t just for display, however; several have competed at racing events like Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

All About BMW Art Car No. 4

One of the most famous BMW art cars is BMW Art Car No. 4, painted by the legendary Andy Warhol. The pop artist took a BMW M1 and turned it into a colorful machine, combining Warhol’s signature Pop Art style with abstract painting techniques. This model was driven by German driver Manfred Winkelhock in the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans competition, placing second.

The newest BMW art car is the 20^th, designed by New York-based artist Julie Mehretu. Using advanced 3D mapping, Mehretu created a dynamic BMW M Hybrid V8 that features numerous digitally altered photographs assembled in a dot grid to create a sharp look. This model also competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and is touring the United States for the first time.
