BMW Developing Solid-State Battery Technology

The automaker renowned for innovative technology has an exciting announcement about the BMW i7. This sedan is currently being tested with all-solid-state battery (ASSB) cells. What is ASSB Technology?

ASSB technology is a potential driving source for vehicles that deliver higher energy density than current EVs can provide. Using solid power cells and sulfide-based electrolytes in the battery pack, these smaller and lighter power sources may very well be the future of electric vehicles.

Working alongside cutting-edge battery manufacturer Solid Power, the BMW Group has installed these cells into BMW i7 sedans with the hope—and the expectation—that ASSB technology will extend the range of BMW EVs, increase the expected battery life, and even enhance safety.

The Current BMW i7 Lineup

ASSB-driven vehicles might not yet be available, but you can still experience a sophisticated and luxurious driving experience in the all-electric 2025 BMW i7. Choose from three variants:

• 2025 BMW i7 eDrive50, a high-performing model with up to 449 horsepower, 479 lb-ft of torque, and a single-speed, fixed-ratio transmission
• 2025 BMW i7 xDrive60, which packs more power with dual electric motors that deliver up to 536 horsepower and 549 lb-ft of torque
• 2025 BMW i7 M70, an elegant yet athletic sedan that puts up to 650 horsepower and 749 lb-ft of torque under your control
